ABOUT THE PLAY

t's arguable that the play has been the most extreme of Trainspotting's three incarnations. The Times reviewed its London debut under the headline "West End gets smack in the face." And now it's in West Ealing.......

As adapter and director Harry Gibson said, "Theatre is a far more explicit medium.... If you have to cry or turn away from particular scenes, then you do. But the scenes stay in. It's necessary that they are there. It's great to be doing this kind of stuff because it's in people's bloodstreams, it's not classic, it's not old, it's not trying to teach you something, it's not try-ing to tell you to live better lives, it's just there like the smell of your own sweat."

Sure, there are things we can't do: we can't suck our Mark Renton through a toilet to a deep blue lagoon in search of pearl-like suppositories; neither can we sink him into a carpet grave after an overdose. But the important thing is that you are seeing the play in the here and now, live and uncensored, - all the drugs, sex, violence, banging music -without the distancing effect of celluloid. Theatre is the high-energy, explicit medium that Trainspotting demands for maxi-mum impact. Which is exactly what the cast, crew and I are aiming for.

Anyway, check your inhibitions at the door, sit back, relax and let us take you on the best trip you've ever had - and it's all completely legal!!

John McSpadyen (Director)
