AUDIENCE COMMENT |
Hilary Potts
This show was largely held together by the performance of David Hovatter, one of Questors' stalwarts. Even then, when he got more and more unreasonable, he lost me - but that was probably as Ibsen intended. I adore The Doll's House and Hedda Gabler so I suspect my dislike of this play is the way he sets Stockmann up as a sympathetic character and then turns him gradually into a fascist. Disappointing. You never think Hedda is going to reform and set up a home for unmarried mothers.
Normally I find the acting standard here astonishingly high, but I just felt this time there was a lot of wooden standing around. It's hard for the two boys with so little to say or do (no chess set, birdcage, or anything for them to look at?), but I also felt Mrs Stockmann and Petra needed more bite - silent passion much of the time, but passion at least. I'm not sure I would have bothered with the revolve, just had more antimacassars and fringed table lamps and taken them away for the publishing house and the public meeting.
Well done, the crowd - but they were so much mixed in the the Questors audience that one could not appreciate their performance in detail. If that was intentional, I think it was a bit hard on some of the young people.
