Questors Student GroupFear and Misery of the Third Reich
by Bertolt Brecht, translated by John WillettPowerful political drama
Fear and Misery of the Third Reich is one of Bertolt Brecht's most naturalistic and accessible dramas. First performed in 1938, and openly anti-Nazi, it consists of vignettes of daily life in Nazi Germany before the War.
The scenes portray - sometimes with macabre humour - the cover-up of state brutality, the erosion of trust, the relentless propaganda, and the fear and eventual compliance of ordinary people during the rise of Nazism.
These touching and profound incidents are woven together in a compelling portrait of how fascism took root in an ordinary society.
