The Cripple of Inishmaan

by Martin McDonagh

Hilariously black comedy

In 1934 the people of Inishmaan learn that a Hollywood director is coming to the neighbouring island to make a documentary film. No one is more excited than Billy, a crippled orphan whose chief occupation has been staring at cows and yearning for a girl who wants nothing to do with him.

Billy is determined to cross the sea to the nearby island and audition for the film. But news of his audacity causes a mainly negative response in this rumour-starved community.

The Cripple of Inishmaan is a comic tale with a rich cast of comic characters. But it also contains darkness in its portrayal of a world so cramped by boredom, religion and isolation, that hope is an affront to its order.

Suitable for ages 11+
Contains informal oaths

This amateur production is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd
