Julian Light Operatic Society presentsPrincess Ida
by W S Gilbert and Arthur SullivanGreat G&S with full orchestra
Princess Ida was first performed in 1884 when feminism, women's education and Darwinian Evolution were controversial subjects in Victorian England. This production is set in Edwardian times when suffragettes were active but nonetheless the battle of the sexes continued unabated.
Princess Ida was betrothed in infancy in an arranged marriage to Hilarion, but twenty years on she has gone her feminist ways and set up a university that teaches that women are superior to men and should rule in their stead (remarkably prophetic!). Hilarion however intends to get his girl and with his mates sets about this challenging task, determined that love will triumph.
Of all the G & S operas Ida deserves to be done more often. It is a fun show, the plot is plausible and Sullivan's score is majestic.
Directed by Fraser Grant, with full orchestra directed by Harry Ogg.
