Ahead of the Saturday matinee performance of Lady Susan (buy tickets here) we'll also be running an engaging workshop which explores the protagonists of Jane Austen's novels.

We’ll look at the importance of bravery in Austen characters. Perhaps only one of her heroines is possessed of bravery which is perfectly balanced by integrity, wit and charm – while another, though full of integrity and good nature, has disastrously lacked bravery in the past and needs to learn it now.

We’ll read aloud sections of text and discuss the key qualities of Jane’s unforgettable heroines.

All of Austen’s heroines discover that they have something to learn and all of them, shamefaced perhaps, willingly enter into the process of gaining essential insight. Even Emma Woodhouse, sure of her penetrative powers but actually blinded by a deep self-deception which threatens to overthrow her and harm those around her, learns to know herself in time for a happy ending.

The only character who is sure she has nothing to learn is the adulterous, sexy, middle-aged, confident, bold, totally selfish and yet wonderfully fascinating Lady Susan.
