ABOUT THE PLAY |
Pinter was born in London in 1930, the only son of a Jewish Tailor and was evacuated twice during the Second World War. He was educated at Hackney Downs Grammar School and briefly attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He registered as a conscientious objector and in 1949 he was fined by a magistrate for refusing to do National Service.
He initially worked in the theatre as an actor, including spending a year with Donald Wolfit's company in 1953. He started to write poetry and plays and in 1957 wrote The Room. In 1958 The Birthday Party, his first full length play was produced in the West End. In 1966 he was awarded the CBE in recognition of his playwriting.
Pinter has continued to work in the theatre as an actor, playwright and director. He became an Associate Director of the National Theatre under Peter Hall's artistic directorship and in 1996 was awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for lifetime's achievement in the theatre. |
