A performance of Rhythm and Mystery – Forest, Moon and Sea by SpiralArts.
This is an intergenerational and mixed arts production, inspired by nature and developed from our creative explorations through improvisation, play, choreography and composition.
The Forest developed from expressing our individual relationships to particular trees and has grown into a group piece incorporating a poem, improvised music, movement and dance and two songs inspired by trees.
The Moon pieces are atmospheric and have been inspired by various poems about the Moon, using original, composed music and song, and solo and small group choreographed dances.
The lake is a quiet, reflective piece including simple, mirrored movement, choreographed and improvised, with atmospheric sound from Tibetan Bowls.
The Sea reflects the movements of the sea, improvised music and the singing of the sirens. It moves from soft shore waves, through a tempest and back to peace, ending with a song that brings us back to the safety of the harbour.
The movement incorporates various styles including contemporary/expressive dance and Eastern Martial Art techniques.
Depending who is available, the music can include piano, flute, violin, cello, clarinet, small harp, drums, percussion and singing bowls. Some of it is original composed by members of the group.
The singing is drawn from classical, folk and jazz repertoires, as well as some improvisation.
Some of the poetry is original, written by group members.
We are a group of artists from diverse backgrounds, talents, ages and experience who enjoy creative exploration together, often inspired by nature as our source material.
Movement, dance and body awareness are our main common denominators, working with principles of movement incorporating various styles from Western and Eastern disciplines.
There are currently about 8-10 members including dancers, musicians, singers, actors and poets.
We work in natural environments then form and refine the work in the studio. This creates a rich tapestry of original work incorporating dance, movement, music, song and poetry, developed from improvisation, choreography, and composition.
We believe our work is accessible and creative and, where appropriate, would like to include some audience participation.
We would welcome any feedback.
