Summer Study Days

Study day: Lord Alfred Tennyson

22 Jul | The Emmet Room

A line drawing of Tennyson

Summer Study Days

Study day: Lord Alfred Tennyson

Alexander Fairbairn-Dixon

Exploring 'In Memoriam' by Lord Alfred Tennyson

We’ll read and discuss extracts from this moving elegy. We’ll consider Tennyson’s depiction of friendship, the English landscape, domestic scenes, and affections.

Exploring how Victorian readers and reviewers responded to the poem, we’ll ask what ways the poem laid the foundations for Tennyson’s laureateship? How does the poem address British identity, and questions of faith and theology?

We’ll explore some of the contexts of the poem and discuss the ways Tennyson draws from the tradition of elegists. We’ll examine the poem’s structure and ask why In Memoriam held a special place in the Victorian mind?
